Woods near Rydal Water

This small woodland of mainly hazel, lies near the River Rothay to the west of Rydal Water and during May, blossoms with bluebells. The flowers usually last about 3 weeks and are best under the trees, although they also blossom on the shaded north facing slopes of Loughrigg Terace, just beyond this point.

We also have external iPIX from Ambleside and above Rydal Water.

There is a wealth of culture within 25 minutes of Smallwood House Hotel. For up to date information visit:

Grasmere has Dove Cottage with Rydal Mount close by, both former homes of William Wordsworth. Sawrey is where Beatrix Potter's characters sprang to life. At Grizedale Forest you'll find a fascinating sculputure trail, while Brantwood (John Ruskin's home) offers you an insight into the life of this influential writer. It is this unique mix which ensures such a memorable and fulfilling holiday for mind and body.
