Ambleside, five miles north west of Windermere village, at the head of Lake Windermere, is at the hub of the central and south lakes visitor experience. Popular with tourists and walkers alike the town centre bristles with activity. There are retail outlets offering outdoor equipment on just about every street corner whilst, for the less energetic visitors, café’s and restaurants are in abundance too.

Grasmere has Dove Cottage with Rydal Mount close by, both former homes of William Wordsworth. Sawrey is where Beatrix Potter's characters sprang to life. At Grizedale Forest you'll find a fascinating sculputure trail, while Brantwood (John Ruskin's home) offers you an insight into the life of this influential writer.
